The red ring of death is the most common xbox 360 failure, it is a sign that your xbox 360 has overhead and damaged itself, sometimes you will notice that the 360 locks up during game play and will only play again after a break, and then they soon lock up again. in some cases the console doesn't start up at all, your xbox 360 lights will look like the image below

Another problem you may have is disc read error, such as the image below, in this case your disc may be scratched or dirty, cleaning or replacing the game may fix the problem. If not then the optical drive is on its last legs, and a new one will have to be programmed and installed.
